Ethos

Positives

  • Strategy: To invest in venture capital and small companies predominantly in the north of the UK using a “More than Money” approach in its support.

Issues

  • Not unique: Although the slogan is excellent, the strategy is not unique. It is the execution of it that matters.

The Management

Positives

  • Team: The team has broad experience in asset management, corporate finance, venture capital and other corporate experience.

Issues

  • Growth: Team growth has gone through spurts, which needs to be managed well.

Nuts & bolts

  • Finances: Although it has consistently invested for growth, it should break even in 2024 and is well capitalised for future growth.
  • Staffing: Praetura has consistently grown its staffing ahead of capacity requirements, with the last large expansion in 2022.

Servicing

  • Advisers: Experienced 12-person Business Development team that now covers most of the UK.
  • Customers: A smaller, experienced, customer service team deals with investors.

Compliance

  • FCA: Authorised by the FCA as a Small Authorised UK AIFM (Sub-Threshold). It is authorised to conduct venture capital business and may control, but not hold, client money.
  • Team: There is a two-person internal team and consultants are also used.
